The Roßkanal with the water no. 6890 is a connecting canal for shipping between the Roßhafen and the Süderelbe, Köhlbrand in the Hamburg port area . It runs parallel to the eastern approach to the Köhlbrand Bridge . The mean water depth of the approximately 1,300 meter long canal is around 4 meters at low tide. It was built in early 1900.

history

After Hamburg's customs connection on October 15, 1888, the Port of Hamburg became a free port with fixed and floating customs borders. In order to enable small ships to bypass the free port, coming from the Upper Elbe there was the option to travel south through the Müggenburger Kanal , Zollhafen , Veddelkanal , Ellerholzkanal , Roßkanal, Rugenberger Hafen and Köhlfleet (Köhlfleth). It also made it possible for river boats to avoid the busy Elbe and to reach the rear port approaches.

An equivalent was the northern variant Ericusgraben , Brooktoorhafen , Magdeburgerhafen (over this waterway there was a roller bridge and five swing bridges ) and Zollkanal . This meant that even tall vehicles could bypass the fixed Elbe bridges around 1925.
