The Rethe bascule bridge is a combined rail and road bascule bridge in the port of Hamburg . It crosses the Rethe at the confluence with the Reiherstieg and connects the Hohe Schaar with Neuhof .

This bascule bridge took over the tasks of the old Rethe lift bridge from 1934 directly to the east , which was dismantled in 2018. The old lift bridge took four minutes to raise, the new bascule bridge eight minutes to fold up.

The Rethe bascule bridge has a span of 104 meters and opens a fairway 64 m wide and unlimited in height. It consists of two separately hydraulically movable double-wing bridges, 14 m wide for the road and 10 m wide for the railroad. It takes about four minutes to open and twice as long to close. The level crossings in the course of the road were removed by a flyover in the southern inlet (raising the tramway) .

The client was the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). The draft planning was carried out by the engineering offices GRASSL Beratende Ingenieure and Sellhorn Ingenieurgesellschaft . The construction work was carried out by the “Arge Rethebrücke”, a merger of Hochtief Solutions , Bilfinger  F + Z , Bilfinger MCE and Waagner Biro .

The new Rethe Bridge was built from June 2011 to summer 2016. It is currently the largest bascule bridge in Europe.

The new Rethe Bridge was approved for road traffic on July 11, 2016, and for rail traffic on December 15, 2017. The cost of the new construction rose from 95 million to 173 million euros.
