RetroArch is a free, open source and cross-platform front-end for emulators , game engines , video games , media players and other applications. It is the reference implementation of the Libretro API that was developed quickly, easily, and portable. It is licensed under the GNU GPLv3 .

RetroArch runs programs that have been converted into dynamic libraries, so-called Libretro-Cores, and uses multiple user interfaces, input, audio and video drivers and other sophisticated functions such as audio filters, multi-pass shaders, netplay, gameplay rewind, cheats etc.

RetroArch has been ported to many platforms. It can run on multiple PC operating systems ( Windows , MacOS , Linux ), home consoles ( PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 , Wii U , etc.), handheld consoles ( PlayStation Vita , Nintendo 3DS , etc.) and smartphones ( Android , iOS, etc.) .,) embedded systems ( Raspberry Pi (also implemented RetroPie) ODROID etc.) and even in web browsers using the emscripten - compiler is used.

RetroArch is hailed as one of the emulators that can be used to play most games with a front end.

It has been criticized that the configuration is difficult due to the multitude of options available to the user, at the same time RetroArch is praised for its multitude of functions.
