The PC Engine SuperGrafx was one of the company NEC of Japan produced steady 8-bit - game console of the fourth generation of consoles .
history
The SuperGrafx was brought onto the Japanese market by NEC in 1989 as the successor console for the PC Engine . The console was supposed to be a response to the newly emerging competition in the form of the Sega Mega Drive and was later positioned against the Super NES .
The new system offered downward compatibility with the PC engine, more colors and larger sprites. Since the differences to the predecessor and the number of games overall were too small, many video gamers refrained from buying the SuperGrafx in view of the high price. As a result, NEC stopped production in 1991 and turned back to the PC engine.
Games
The games for the SuperGrafx were released on HuCards like for the PC Engine , which is an important cornerstone for the downward compatibility of the SuperGrafx. Games for the PC engine could be played after flipping a switch on the back of the system. The CD-ROM², published in 1988, can only be connected to the interface unit of the CD-ROM² using an adapter (RAU-30) due to the different form of the SuperGrafx. The Super-CD-Rom² , available from 1991 onwards, can simply be plugged in without an adapter, and the built-in Super-System-Card eliminates the need for a system card in the module slot when operating the new drive.
However, the number of games specially developed for the SuperGrafx is just seven.
