Retrospective
Retrospective ( lat. Retrospectare "looking back") describes a look back at events that have already happened.
Examples of usage
In the fine arts , the retrospective is an art exhibition that provides an overview of one or more creative phases, a specific aspect (e.g. a retrospective of drawings ) or the entire oeuvre of an artist . Instead of only showing the most recent works, the retrospective creates a context for works that are further back. Sometimes it also gives cause for a critical reassessment.
In the field of film, this is understood to be the most comprehensive film series possible on the work of a film director , film actor , other filmmaker, on the art of film of a certain era or a certain genre . Retrospectives are often part of a film festival (there is a retrospective every year at the Berlinale ). Retrospectives are also part of the program in many municipal cinemas .
Catherine David , the artistic director of documenta X (1997), used the term retro per spektiven to describe her approach. In connection with the leitmotif “Looking back ahead”, this meant to relate the exhibition to the previous documenta exhibitions and at the same time to place them in their “tradition of innovation”.
