Hernals rescue station
The listed rescue station Hernals of MA 70 (Vienna Rescue) is one of twelve municipal rescue stations in Vienna and the seat of the Vienna Rescue Museum.
history
The Hernals rescue station was originally built in 1882 by the Hernals community at Gilmgasse 18 according to plans by Johann Gschwandner as a communal epidemic hospital with space for 50 beds. After this was no longer needed, the two-storey building with the far protruding central projection and the historicist facade was rebuilt in 1903/1904 according to plans by Cesar Poppovits and converted into a U- shaped complex with front garden including secessionist garden grilles and gate.
Justified by the history of the Vienna rescue, there was a second rescue station about 500 meters away at Lidlgasse 7. In April 2004 the two rescue stations were merged at the Gilmgasse site.
In 2002, the municipality of Vienna announced an architecture competition for the planned contemporary renovation, which was decided in 2003 and which the architects Geiswinkler & Geiswinkler won. The completed rescue station was opened in July 2006. On February 1, 2008, the Hernals rescue station was placed under monument protection ( list entry ).
The Hernals rescue station provides two emergency doctors, 14 paramedics and six emergency vehicles to around 280,000 people in districts 16, 17 and 18 as well as parts of districts 8, 9, 15 and 19.
Vienna rescue museum
The Vienna Rescue Museum was founded in 1991. Around 300 exhibits documenting the founding and development of the Vienna Rescue Service are presented in three halls and can be viewed by prior arrangement.
