Reuland (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lords of Reuland were a medieval noble family in what is now Wallonia .

They were tenants of the Counts of Vianden and were first mentioned in a document in 1128 with Johann I. de Reulant , Abbot of Stavelot - Malmedy .

The most famous offspring of the family was Knight Dietrich von Reuland, who made a name for himself as the Lion of Reuland during the Third Crusade of Emperor Barbarossa .

In 1300 Arnold von Reuland occupied the Saarburg near Trier , to which the Lords of Reuland had previously acquired rights from the Counts of Luxembourg . He only released the castle after the Archbishop of Trier, Baldwin of Luxembourg, bought his rights from him in 1313.

In 1313 the line died out with Arnold von Reuland. His family seat, Reuland Castle in today's Burg-Reuland , passed to the Lords of Blankenheim.
