description

The RMS Libava

The Rhein-, Maas- und See-Schiffahrtkontor was founded in 1948 and works, among other things, as a shipping company , in chartering and as a ship brokerage . The main area of activity of the company is short-haul liner services in European coastal shipping . The company started out with chartering and brokerage for river and sea shipping. A period of upheaval began in the 1950s when smaller and owner-managed ships left this trading area, while the more flexibly organized RMS, with its broad capital commitment, had been building liner services to Great Britain and Ireland since the 1960s . The structural change in this segment, which lasted until the 1970s and which had to give way to shipping companies such as A. Kirsten , which had long worked in England , was countered by RMS by expanding direct traffic and concentrating on traffic with specialized ships (e.g. for steel or cellulose transport), which generated higher freight rates . In the following years services came to Scandinavia , Russia and the Iberian Peninsula are added and from the first half of the 1980s, the RMS began to own ships bereedern . Today RMS operates around 15 to 20 ships of its own as well as several long-term chartered ships (2013: 63 units) with carrying capacities between 1200 and 4000 tons, whereby the fleet consists exclusively of river and seagoing ships . Around four million tons are transported per year and a turnover of around 95 million euros is achieved (2009). Around 30% of the transported volume is made up of steel cargoes. In addition, non-ferrous metals, wood, cellulose and minerals form larger transport shares. In addition, the company also carries out global chartering and offers more extensive door-to-door services in which the entire transport is organized. Around 100 people are employed at the headquarters in Duisburg as well as other German branches in Hamburg and Bremen and offices in several European countries.

In 2004 Rhenus acquired a quarter of the company shares, followed by the complete takeover in 2007. In 2012 the name was changed while keeping the ancestral abbreviation RMS. The company is a member of the ShortSeaShipping Inland Waterway Promotion Center .
