The states bordering the Rhine are the successor states to the signatories of the Rhine Navigation Act of 1831:

The responsible environment ministers represent these states at the Conference of Ministers of the Rhine . The previous Rhine ministerial conferences:

The states bordering the Rhine have various instruments at their disposal to safeguard their common interests.

The Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine in Strasbourg serves to uphold the principles guaranteed in the Mannheim Rhine Navigation Act of October 17, 1868: freedom of navigation, equal treatment of ships of all nations - exemption from fees and charges based solely on the fact of shipping - dismantling of natural or administrative obstacles to the freedom of navigation, maintenance of the fairway in a good and navigable condition.

The Rhine Shipping Courts are responsible for questions relating to shipping law. a. in Duisburg - Ruhrort and the Higher Rhine Court in Cologne .

The Rhine Commissions of the International Rhine Regulation are responsible for regulating the river bed.

The direct protection interests of the states bordering the Rhine are represented by the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine (ICPR) based in Koblenz . This international organization was founded in 1950 on the basis of an international agreement between the countries bordering the Rhine, Switzerland, Liechtenstein , Austria , France, Germany and the Netherlands as well as Luxembourg and the European Union .
