The Rhine pear is an old Rhenish regional variety of the cultivated pear ( Pyrus communis ).

Origin and Distribution

The exact origin of the 'Rheinbirne' is not known, but it is, as the name and its current distribution area suggest, in the Rhineland . Its main distribution area is in the Rhein-Sieg district . There, as part of nature and species protection projects, old trees are being tended and new ones are being planted in order to preserve this old regional variety.
