Rhiginia cinctiventris is a species of bug from the subfamily Ectrichodiinae , which belongs to the family of predatory bugs (Reduviidae).

features

The bugs grow to be 18 to 23 millimeters long and thus much larger than the related species Rhiginia cruciata, which is also native to the USA . The dark colored bugs have an orange-red border. There are two large orange-red spots on the front part of the pronotum; on the back there are two elongated orange-red spots that run along the sides. The legs are black.

Distribution and habitats

The species occurs in the Nearctic and Neotropical . In the United States it is represented in the south. Their distribution area extends from Alabama to Arizona. Furthermore, their occurrence extends over Mexico and Central America to Colombia.

Way of life

The predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular bugs feed predatory on pipods (especially from the families Spirobolidae and Polydesmidae ).

etymology

The name addition cinctiventris is derived from Latin and means "with a belted belly". This refers to the light edge of the abdomen.
