Rhinoceros 3D (often abbreviated as Rhino or Rhino3D ) is software for computer-aided 3D modeling and computer-aided design .
overview
The program was developed by the American company Robert McNeel & Associates, founded in 1980, and, in contrast to other comparable programs, uses NURBS modeling. This means that any curves and surfaces can be displayed very precisely, unlike in programs with polygon-based modeling. When using Rhinoceros, these shapes are saved in the program's own .3dm format.
The Rhinoceros program is used in many areas. It is used, for example, in CAD, CAM , rapid prototyping , 3D printing , product design, and graphic and multimedia design.
Rhinoceros was developed for both Windows and OS X operating systems.
The current version on both operating systems is Rhinoceros 6.21, released in December 2019.
Interfaces
Rhinoceros supports a wide range of file formats for importing and exporting CAD and graphics formats.
Supported file formats
• .3ds | • AI | • BMP |
• CSV (export of properties) | • DirectX | • DWG / DXF ( AutoCAD 200x, 14, 13, and 12) |
• FBX | • GHS | • GTS |
• IGES | • KML | • LWO |
• Micro station DGN | • OBJ | • PLY |
• POV | • RIB | • SAT (ACIS, export only) |
• SketchUp | • SLC | • STL |
• SolidWorks SLDPRT and SLDASM | • STEP | • TGA |
• TIFF (uncompressed) | • UDO | • VDA |
• VRML | • X_T (only export) |
The following additional file formats can be used with Rhinoceros using plug-ins :
• 3DPDF | • ACIS | • Autodesk Inventor |
• CATIA V4 | • CATIA V5 | • CATIA V6 |
• CGR | • Creo Parametric | • JT |
• Parasolide | • PLMXML | • Solid Edge |
• Siemens NX |
When importing files that do not correspond to the program's own .3dm format, they are first converted before they can be edited. Geometries from common CAD formats are added to the model opened in Rhinoceros.
