Rhinochimaera is a genus consisting of three species from the family of long-nosed chimera (Rhinochimaeridae) in the order of the sea cats (Chimaeriformes). The fish are disjoint in the north and south-west Atlantic, on the coast of southern Africa, in the Mozambique Strait , in the Australasian Mediterranean , in the north-west and east of the Pacific (Costa Rica and Peru) and live near the ocean floor at depths of 330 to 1500 Meters. .

features

Rhinochimaera species reach body lengths of 82 to 165 cm. They are uniformly dark, gray-brown, light brown or whitish in color without any patterns or drawings. The most striking feature of the genus is the long rostrum, which, however, does not end in an upwardly curved tip as with Harriotta , but runs straight. The mouth is in front of the relatively small eyes. It is covered with thin tooth plates with a smooth surface and blade-like edges. The first dorsal fin has a short base. In front of her lies a sawn spine that is slightly higher than the first dorsal fin. When placed backwards, it does not reach the base of the second dorsal fin. The second dorsal fin is long and low. Both dorsal fins are separated from each other by a clear indentation. One anal fin is missing. The pectoral fins are long and oval or narrow. The pelvic fins are wide or long and rounded at the end. The clasps are simple, tube-like organs with a small, fleshy tip that carries some pointed denticles. The tail of the fish consists of an upper and a lower, not particularly high tail fin and a central, more or less elongated filament, which can also be broken off and missing or short.

Rhinochimaera species are oviparous. Since they live in greater depths, little is known about their behavior and their way of life.
