Harriotta is a genus consisting of two species from the family of the long-nosed chimera (Rhinochimaeridae) in the order of the sea cats (Chimaeriformes). The fish occur disjointly in all oceans, on the continental slopes , in deep-sea mountains and near the ocean floor at depths of 200 to 2600 meters. The genus was named in honor of the English mathematician , natural philosopher and astronomer Thomas Harriot .
features
Harriotta species reach body lengths of 74 to 120 cm. The most striking feature of the genus is the convex head profile and the long rostrum that ends in a fine, upwardly curved tip. This characteristic is particularly pronounced in adult males. The mouth is below the eyes. It is covered with thick, highly mineralized tooth plates. The tail of the fish consists of an upper and a lower, not particularly high caudal fin and a central, more or less elongated filament. One anal fin is missing.
Harriotta species are oviparous. Since they live in greater depths, little is known about their behavior and their way of life.
species
There are 2 types of Harriotta :
- Harriotta chaetirhampha (Tanaka, 1909)
- Harriotta raleighana Goode & Bean, 1895, ( type species )
