Rhyssemus germanus is a beetle from the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae). The species is assigned to the subfamily of the dung beetles (Aphodiinae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 2.5-3.5 millimeters. The small, elongated, oval black-brown beetles have 9-part antennae with a movable three-part club. The pronotum shows clear transverse furrows. The elytra are covered with dotted longitudinal stripes.

Occurrence

Rhyssemus germanus occurs in the Palearctic . The species is distributed in central and southern Europe, in tropical Africa and in parts of Asia. In Central Europe the species is only locally available and mostly rare. The beetle species was introduced in northeastern North America.

Way of life

The typical habitat of the psammophilic beetle species are areas with dry, sandy and sandy-loamy soils. These include dunes, especially inland dunes , sand pits and sandy river banks. The beetles often stay on grass roots, under rotting plant rosettes and on halophytes . The beetles are also found in compost and in mammalian underground burrows.
