Rice Research Institute (Bangkok)

The Thai Rice Research Institute is an institute for the study of all aspects and development of methods and varieties of rice . The institute is part of the Department of Agriculture .

goals and tasks

The Rice Research Institute develops varieties of rice and other grains that are appropriate to the climatic and economic conditions of Thailand. In addition, sufficient quantities of seeds of the recommended varieties are produced and made available to rice farmers.

Further tasks concern the development of suitable cultivation methods for the farmers as well as methods for rice processing that increase quality and yield.

For this purpose, regional research centers are available nationwide, which apply the methods and procedures developed and check them for suitability and practical relevance.

Projects and results

Various types of rice were developed and made ready for use under the supervision of the Rice Research Institute. More recently these have been:

  • Pathum Thani 1 - one of the best rice varieties in the country from 2000, which is used in particular by farmers in the central region
  • Sanpatong 1 - an alternative for farmers who want to grow sticky rice in the dry season
  • Surin 1 - developed for the northeast region of Thailand ( Isan ) , where drought and salty soils are common

The Thai Rice Research Institute is located on Thanon Phahonyothin (Phahonyothin Street) in Chatuchak , Bangkok .
