Richard Čemus

Richard Václav Čemus SJ (born September 2, 1954 in Prague ) is a Czech Roman Catholic priest and theologian .

Life

His family was persecuted by the communist regime for religious practices. Because of the persecution, his father spent 7 years in prison. In 1970 his family emigrated to Germany. He started high school in Berlin and ended in Fürstenfeldbruck . From 1975 to 1981 he studied theology and philosophy; first in Freiburg im Breisgau and later in Salzburg . He later also studied Russian religious thought at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.

In 1983 Čemus joined the Society of Jesus. He made his novitiate in Genoa. He completed his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Tomáš Špidlík . The work focused on Russian spirituality and prayer. He is currently teaching at the Pontificio Istituto Orientale in Rome the spirituality of the Christian East, Eastern monasticism and Russian spirituality.
