Richard B. Dunn

Richard B. Dunn (born December 14, 1927 in Baltimore , Maryland , † September 29, 2005 in Las Cruces , New Mexico ) was an American astronomer and former director of the National Solar Observatory. Dunn was a pioneer in solar physics.

Life

Dunn received his PhD from Harvard University and worked at Sacramento Peak in Sunspot since 1953. He dealt with solar physics and developed a unique solar telescope here.

In January 1998, Dr. Richard Dunn was awarded the George Ellery Hale Prize of the American Astronomical Society for "outstanding contributions to the field of solar astronomy over an extended period of time.

In 1998 Richard Dunn was honored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his lifetime achievement . The Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) located on Sacramento Peak in New Mexico has been renamed the Richard B. Dunn Solar Telescope .
