Richard B. Glickman

Richard Bruce Glickman (born October 31, 1926 in New York City , United States - † February 18, 2018 in Sherman Oaks , California ) was an American film technician and engineer. He is considered one of the inventors of the fog machine and was awarded a technology Oscar .

Richard Bruce Glickman came to Los Angeles with his family as a child, where he attended Audubon Junior High and Dorsey High School. In 1943 he was drafted into military service. After his university degree ( Bachelor of Science ) in mechanical engineering from UCLA (1948) Glickman initially worked in the non-cinematic field. He worked in the fields of rocket development and technology as well as in questions of oil refining and pilot flame arrestor and was finally appointed chief engineer at ColorTran Industries in 1959. Here he led the innovations in the field of lighting systems, which would ultimately also be of considerable importance for the film industry. In 1965, Glickman and two of his colleagues were each awarded a technology Oscar for the progress made in the design and application of lighting units with quartz iodine lamps in film camera photography.

Glickman also wrote several articles for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers' journals. In 1971 Glickman was promoted to technical advisor to Robert Hagel, then president of the Burbank film studios. The fog machine developed by Glickman was created while he was working for Rosco Laboratories and soon became the standard in Hollywood film and television productions. Richard Glickman also independently developed a light meter specifically for cameramen and designed, produced and marketed a range of studio electrical connections called stage connectors. In 2003 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored him with the John Byer Medal and in 2011 appointed him a so-called Science Fellow.

Richard Bruce Glickman was married to the same woman for 68 years. This marriage has two sons.
