Richard Beitzen

Richard Beitzen ( February 24, 1882 - March 30, 1918 in the North Sea ) was a German naval officer , crew 01 , most recently lieutenant captain , commander of the torpedo boat G 87 and chief of the 14th torpedo boat semi-flotilla in the First World War .

Life

The 14th torpedo boat semi-flotilla got into a British minefield about 100 nautical miles northwest of Heligoland when returning from a control voyage in the German Bight . The torpedo boats G 93 and G 94 were hit by mines and G 94 immediately began to sink. Beitzen ran with his guide boat G 87 to the wreckers to save their crews , and G 87 also ran into a mine . Within 50 minutes, all three boats sank to position 54 ° 54 '  N , 6 ° 25'  E : G 94 at 5:40 a.m. with 13 dead, G 87 at 6:20 a.m. with 43 dead and G 93 at 6:30 a.m. with 10 dead.

Honors

On January 21, 1918, Beitzen was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Royal Prussian House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords .

The German Navy named its destroyer Richard Beitzen , the fourth and last of the destroyer class 1934 , after him.
