Richard Henry Rupert Bertie, 14th Earl of Lindsey, 9th Earl of Abingdon (born June 28, 1931 ) is a British peer and politician .

Origin and family environment

Richard Bertie comes from an old English noble family. He was the only son of Lt. Col. Hon. Arthur Michael Cosmo Bertie (1886–1957) from his first marriage to Aline Rose Arbuthnot-Leslie († 1948). His father was a younger son of Montagu Bertie, 7th Earl of Abingdon (1836–1928).

His cousin Andrew Bertie (1929-2008) was the 78th Grand Master of the Order of Malta .

Life and career

Richard Bertie attended the private school in Ampleforth . From 1952 to 1957 he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Norfolk Regiment . He then began a career as an insurance broker. From 1958 to 1992 he was underwriting agent at Lloyd’s , as well as chairman of Dawes and Henderson Agencies Ltd from 1988 to 1992 and also chairman of the Anglo-Ivory-Coast Society from 1974 to 1977.

With the childless death of his half-cousin Montagu Towneley-Bertie, 13th Earl of Lindsey , he inherited his title as 14th Earl of Lindsey , 9th Earl of Abingdon Baron Norreys in 1963 . A seat in the British House of Lords was associated with these titles . As a member of the Conservative Party , Bertie participated regularly in the debates there until he lost his hereditary parliamentary seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Marriage and offspring

He has been married to Norah Elisabeth Farquar-Oliver since January 5, 1957, with whom he has two sons and a daughter:

  • Henry Mark Willoughby Bertie, Lord Norreys (* 1958);
  • Lady Annabel Frances Rose Bertie (* 1969).
  • Hon. Alexander Michael Richard Bertie (* 1970).
