Richard GA Buxton

Richard George Alexander Buxton (* before 1971 in Mansfield , England ) is a British Graecist and professor emeritus of Greek language and literature at the University of Bristol .

Life

After attending Nottingham High School, Buxton studied at King's College , Cambridge and at the École des hautes études , Paris . At King's College he received his BA in 1971, his MA in 1974 and received his doctorate in 1977 with a dissertation on Peitho: its place in Greek culture and its exploration in some plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles . He has been Lecturer in Classics at the University of Bristol since 1973, senior lecturer since 1989, Reader in Ancient Greek since 1990 and Professor of Greek Language and Literature since 1995. From 2006 to 2012 he was president of the Fondation pour le Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae , and from 2003 to 2013 he was on the editorial committee of the Thesaurus Cultus et Rituum Antiquorum . In 2013 he retired, and in 2014 he received the title of Emeritus Professor. As such, he is still active in research.

Research areas

Buxton works on Greek mythology and literature. He has published anthologies on the question of the relationship between myth and logos and the Greek religion . Two volumes on Greek mythology, their imaginations and their contexts have been translated several times. Another aspect is the metamorphosis in Greek mythology. In addition, he has published works in particular on Greek tragedy , especially Sophocles .
