Richard Griese

Richard Griese (born October 27, 1930 ; † March 16, 2016 ) was a German national basketball and handball player .

career

Griese played handball and basketball, and made it to the national team in both sports. In 1953 he participated as a member of an all-German team in the European basketball championship in Moscow , in 1955 and 1957 he played with the German selection again in European championships.

At club level, Griese celebrated his greatest success in basketball in 1956 when he became German champion with ATV Düsseldorf. In the meantime, in the 1953/54 season, he played for the Turnerbund Heidelberg and was third with the team in the German championship before returning to Düsseldorf in 1954. As a senior athlete, he later also won several German basketball championships.

In 1964 Griese was awarded the sports badge of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .
