Richard José Hidalgo (born June 28, 1975 in Caracas ) is a former Venezuelan baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB).

In 1998 he joined the MLB as a rookie , where he played for the Houston Astros until 2000 .

2001 to 2002 Hidalgo played with the Philadelphia Phillies . There he was awarded the Gold Glove (best field player in the league at his position) twice in a row . In 2004 he played for the New York Mets . The last stop of his career in MLB was the Texas Rangers , where he played in 2005. For 2006 he had signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles for the minor leagues . The Orioles, however, met his request to terminate the contract before the season began. In January 2007, the Astros took Hidalgo again under contract, this time for the Minor Leagues. Since he did not show any convincing performances in spring training and was not ready to be sent to a minor league team, the Astros dissolved the contract at the end of 2007. In April 2007 he announced the end of his professional career.
