Richard Holtze
Richard Holtze (born February 9, 1824 in Belk , Rybnik district , † January 27, 1891 in Katowice ) was a doctor, member of the Prussian House of Representatives and the first and long-time chairman of the city council of Katowice.
Life
Richard Holtze was the eldest son of a large family of an estate manager. He attended high school in Gliwice and then studied medicine in Breslau .
In 1851 Holtze came to the village of Katowice, where he settled as a doctor. Together with the industrialist and member of the Reichstag, Friedrich Wilhelm Grundmann , whose daughter Bertha he married in 1857, he played a decisive role in the development of the village of Katowice into an industrial town, which was finally granted town charter in 1865.
In 1866 the first city council elections took place in Katowice. On March 3, the citizens elected the 18 city councilors from 342 candidates, with Holtze at their head. The fact that he was fluent in both Polish and German was beneficial for his election as chairman of the city council. On April 4th the city council elected the magistrate's college, i. H. the first mayor Louis Diebel from Krappitz , his representative Mr. Rossel and four city councilors.
In addition to his political activities, Holtze became a city doctor who treated around 100 mostly destitute patients pro bono every day . He was a co-founder of the Katowice Masonic Lodge Zum Licht in the east and its first master of the chair .
Holtze was also politically active outside of Katowice. From 1877 to 1883 he was a member of the National Liberal Party in the Prussian House of Representatives.
