Willy Maltaite

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willy Maltaite alias Will (born October 30, 1927 in Anthée , Belgium , † February 18, 2000 ) was a Belgian comic artist . Willy Maltaite is the father of the cartoonist Eric Maltaite .

As a draftsman he was a classic caricaturist who made a significant contribution to the success of the weekly magazine Spirou in the years after the Second World War . Will also represented one of the few links between the schools of Marcinelle ( École Marcinelle ) around the Spirou magazine from Dupuis and from Brussels around the Tintin magazine from Lombard, as he worked for both publishing houses at the same time. From 1958 to 1960 he was even artistic director at Tintin.

education

At the age of 16 he began training as a draftsman and graphic artist with Jijé (Joseph Gillain), one of the fathers of European comics alongside Hergé . In 1946, together with Morris and Franquin, he was a member of the famous household who lived and worked with Jijé in his house. First works for the Dupuis publishing house were published in the magazines Bonnes Soirées and Le Moustique. From there in 1947 he made the leap to the youth magazine Spirou, which was published in the same publishing house. In the same year he published his first own comic ("The Secrets of Banbochal").

Harry and Platte

Will took over the characters " Tif et Tondu " (also published in German under the title "Gin and Fizz") by the draftsman Fernand Dineur in 1948 and developed them into one of the classics of Franco-Belgian semi-funny in over 40 years. The gifted copywriters Maurice Rosy and Maurice Tillieux played a not insignificant role in the success . Rosy wrote the scenarios for Will from 1954 to 1969 and introduced the masked criminal Monsieur Choc (German shock) as an opponent for the hobby detectives in the series. Tillieux created the series "Gil Jourdan" as early as 1956, which Kauka first published under the title "Harro und Platte", later as Jeff Jordan , for which "Tif et Tondu" can be taken as a direct model.

More work

Besides "Tif et Tondu", Will also devoted himself to other projects. In 1957 he created 22 strips of the Lili mannequin series for the adult magazine Paris Flirt based on texts by René Goscinny . From 1962 he drew the short-lived series Eric et Artimon for Spirou based on scripts by Antoine Raymond (alias Vicq ) . Around the same time he created the series Marco et Aldebert and Record et Véronique for Record magazine . Based on texts by Peyo , he also drew two long and one short stories in the Jacky et Célestin series . In 1969 he created the Isabella series together with Yvan Delporte , Raymond Macherot and later André Franquin . In the 1970s he also worked as a background artist and assistant on the series Benni Bärenstark and Natascha . Unusual late works are the 'adult comics' "The Garden of Earthly Delights" (1988), "The 27th Letter" (1990) and "Satan's Judgment" (1993), realized together with Stephen Desberg .
