Richard Smith (guitarist)
Richard Smith (born December 12, 1971 in Beckenham , England ) is an English fingerstyle guitarist . His playing follows the tradition of American country guitarists such as Merle Travis , Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed .
At the age of five, Smith learned fingerpicking on the guitar from his father. At the age of eleven, he was brought on stage by Chet Atkins at a concert in London's Her Majesty's Theater, and he and the audience were very impressed.
In 1999 he moved to Nashville in the US state of Tennessee , where he founded the Hot Club of Nashville , an ensemble that moved stylistically between American western swing and European gypsy jazz . Richard Smith has recently appeared either solo or with his wife, American classical cellist Julie Adams.
Richard Smith easily switches between finger picking and flat picking . His technical skills on the acoustic guitar have earned him several prizes and awards.
