Richard Weiner (percussionist)

Richard Weiner (* 1940 ) is an American percussionist and music teacher.

Weiner studied music at Temple University (Bachelor), Indiana University (Master) and Cleveland State University (PhD). His main teachers were Charles Owen and George Gaber . As the first percussionist, he received a Performer's Certificate from Indiana University. He was a member of the Aspen Festival Orchestra in 1962 and the Chautauqua Summer Symphony in 1964 .

In 1963 George Szell brought him to the Cleveland Orchestra , where he led the percussion section from 1968. On his departure in 2011, he received the Cleveland Orchestra Distinguished Service Award . In his almost fifty-year career, he has performed under conductors such as Pierre Boulez , Lorin Maazel , Christoph von Dohnányi , Franz Welser-Möst and Wladimir Aschkenasi .

He has taught at the Settlement Music School of Philadelphia , Combs College of Music , the Philadelphia Musical Academy , the Philadelphia Board of Education, and Oberlin College, and has given percussion courses at the National Orchestra Institute , the Percussive Arts Society (PASIC), and the New World Symphony .
