Richard Wiseman
Richard Wiseman (* 1966 ) is a British psychologist . A committed supporter of the skeptic movement , he is a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI) and an advisory editor for the journal Skeptical Inquirer .
Wiseman worked as a professional magician before studying psychology in London . Today Wiseman is Head of the Psychology Department at the University of Hertfordshire , where he holds the Chair of Public Understanding of Psychology . His main area of research, which made him known beyond England, is, besides luck and deception, especially the paranormal. 2000–2002, at the urging of the castle staff , he investigated alleged spooky phenomena in Hampton Court Palace in large-scale experiments and concluded from their results that ghostly apparitions can mostly be explained by the effect of physical effects on the tense psyche of people.
Wiseman also spent a year researching the humor of Internet users from 70 countries on a website called Laughlab, and named it the funniest joke in the world .
In 2012 Wiseman dealt with the practical implementation of William James' approach in behavioral psychology. To this end, he wrote the book " Do - not think " to show how behavior changes can be brought about practically without using methods such as positive thinking.
The psychologist has so far written a total of eight books, some of which have also become bestsellers in Germany, including “ So Make Your Fortune ” (2003), “Affenscharf” (2004) and “Quirkologie” (2008). For his book "Paranormality: Why We See What Isn't There" he received the 2012 Robert P. Balles Annual Prize in Critical Thinking from the CSI.
