Richeza annals

The Richeza Annals and later Older Chapter Annals ( Polish: Rocznik Rychezy and later Rocznik kapitulny dawny ) are annals that were kept in Poland from the 11th to the 13th centuries. They are generally regarded as the basis and source of Polish annals . However, the original is lost and the content has only been passed on indirectly.

The annals were kept in Gniezno from around 1013 and are based on the already compiled Annales Colonienses , which Richeza brought to Poland from Germany. Initially, mainly dynastic events were recorded. Around 1032 the entries from the Jordanes annals were most likely taken over, which a few years later were stolen from Poland as spoils of war by Břetislav I and lost to the Polish historiographers.

After the death of Mieszko II. In 1034 Richeza fled Poland and took the annals with him. Her son Casimir brought them back to Poland, where they were continued in the new capital Krakow and served as the court's yearbooks. Gradually they developed into the annals of the Kraków chapter and gained greater prominence in the 12th century. Most likely they were used by Gallus Anonymus for his chronicles and deeds of the dukes and princes of Poland as well as by the author of the Holy Cross annals . It was also used in the 13th century for the annals of the Krakow cathedral chapter . Influences can also be found in the Poznan and Lubin Annals .
