Richmond, Petersham and Ham Open Spaces Act 1902

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Richmond, Petersham and Ham Open Spaces Act 1902 is an act of the British Parliament passed to protect the view from Richmond Hill in London , England .

The Ham and Petersham Commons and some of the meadows with their manorial rights were given to the Richmond Corporation for the common good. The common land rights were abolished by this law. The Thames riverside from Petersham to Kingston was given forever to the Richmond Corporation and Surrey County Council in two sections for the common good.

An original law, The Petersham and Ham Lands Footpaths Bill , was presented by Lord Dysart in 1896 and provided for the fencing of 71 acres of common land. The bill was defeated by 262 votes to 118 because it was considered a violation of the Metropolitan Commons Acts 1866 to 1878.

The law stated that a request to the Ministry of Agriculture in 1896 had revealed that the law did not apply here.

A few years later, the Richmond Hill (Preservation of View) bill passed the parliamentary committees. It contained the same proposals as the previous bill, but put a little more emphasis on preserving the view from Richmond Hill. However, the law was rejected in the House of Commons . The Richmond, Petersham and Ham Open Spaces Act then went into effect on November 18, 1902.

It was proposed that the law be amended under Section 20 of the Greater London Council (General Powers) Act 1982.
