The Directive 2000/53 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 September 2000 on end- regulates the recycling of motor vehicles by recycling within the European Union (EU). It contains u. a. Substance bans in force since July 1, 2003 , for example for heavy metals and chromium (VI).

The aim of the guideline is to increase the reuse and recycling rate annually to 85 percent by 2006 and to 95 percent of the average vehicle weight by 2015. Furthermore, the EU member states are obliged to set up take-back systems for end-of-life vehicles.

The waste management concept of the European Union to be implemented with this directive is based on two complementary strategies:

  • Avoidance of the generation of waste by improving the product design
  • Expansion of the recycling and reuse of waste

The German implementation of the guideline took place on July 1, 2002 through the End-of-Life Vehicle Ordinance .
