IMDS

IMDS (English for. International Material Data System ; German International Material Data System ) is a globally standardized exchange and management system for material data in the automotive industry .

The system has been made available in nine language versions since 2001 by DXC Technology (or by their legal predecessors EDS, HP and HPE). The IMDS is currently used by 35 automobile manufacturers and more than 120,000 suppliers in the automobile industry.

The material and chemical compositions of components, semi-finished products and materials are declared in the IMDS material data . The main benefit of the IMDS material data is the safeguarding and verification of legal substance regulations for complete vehicles and their spare parts. In addition, IMDS material data is used as a data source for calculating the recycling rate according to ISO 22628 in the system approval recyclability of the EU type approval.

IMDS material data is used by the automobile manufacturers for all vehicle classes and requested in the supply chains via supply contracts. Due to stricter legal substance regulations and information requirements, e.g. B. in accordance with Article 33 of the REACH regulation , IMDS material data are also requested for spare parts and accessories.

The aim of the IMDS is to meet the national and international legislation to which automobile manufacturers and suppliers are subject through standards and legal regulations, especially in the environmental sector . Every vehicle manufacturer and supplier is responsible for all aspects of their product and the entire life cycle from manufacture , use, recycling to disposal . Manufacturers are also obliged to provide data on the material composition of the products used in automobiles in order to reconstruct the original material composition and classify it in danger levels. The automobile manufacturers therefore need information about the composition of the components used in their products.

With the help of a material data sheet, this information is recorded at component level.

The main requirement of automobile manufacturers is to be able to summarize and analyze all data of a material data sheet, a component, an assembly , an assembly and an entire automobile. This is possible through the targeted evaluation and compilation of the individual material data sheets of the IMDS.

The MDB are secured against external access and manipulation. Access to the IMDS is restricted, and the system itself is also protected against unauthorized external access.

The international material data system is based, among other things, on the requirements of Directive 2000/53 / EC on end-of-life vehicles and the German end-of-life vehicle regulation . The end-of-life vehicle directive required the vehicle industry to recycle and recycle at least 85 percent of the average vehicle weight by January 1, 2006. Since January 1, 2015, at least 95 percent of the average vehicle weight has to be disposed of and recycled .

For the IMDS, all materials must be assigned a classification according to VDA 231-106.

The IMDS is based on the list of substances subject to mandatory identification in motor vehicles worldwide, GADSL, is an instrument for communicating substance bans in materials and at the same time serves as a basis for checking the approval of the material data sheet for the respective component by the car manufacturer concerned.
