from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rick Gates (born October 18, 1956 ) is an Internet pioneer who is best known for the competition he organized, The Internet Hunt, and the proposal for an Internet encyclopedia , the Interpedia .

He was studying at the University of California's Library School when he began running the monthly competition, The Internet Hunt, in September 1992. Questions only had to be answered with the help of internet sources. Internet services such as Usenet , FTP , Gopher and Telnet were used for the research ( NCSA Mosaic , the first popular web browser , was only published in April 1993). With the advent of the World Wide Web , the competition ended in October 1994 until further notice.

On October 22, 1993 he made in the Usenet newsgroup alt.internet.servicesthe no longer verifiable proposal to jointly create an encyclopedia on the Internet. From this idea the project " Interpedia " developed, which is considered the forerunner of Wikipedia; (see article "Internet AS Encyclopedia", October 31, 1993 by Douglas P. Wilson in the newsgroup alt.bbs.internet)

In 1995 Rick Gates settled in Oregon , where he worked for the software company Net Assets. He has also taught at various library schools in Oregon and at the University of Arizona School of Information Resources & Library Science. He currently lives in Eugene , Oregon.
