The giant fish owl ( Bubo blakistoni ) is a species of owl from the genus of eagle owls ( Bubo ). Originally it formed the genus Ketupa together with some other fish owls from Asia , but this was assigned to the eagle owls after a comprehensive molecular biological study. The first description comes from Henry Seebohm .
description
The giant Fischuhu reaches a body size of 60 to 72 centimeters. The back plumage is dark brown and strongly drawn, the belly plumage a little paler. The throat is white, the iris is orange-yellow and the tufts of ears are long and broad horizontally.
Distribution and ecology
The giant fish owl lives in Russia , China and Japan in dense forests with old trees for its nest (which it mainly creates in tree hollows) and nearby waters that do not freeze even in winter for hunting. It feeds mainly on fish , but occasionally also hunts small mammals , birds , amphibians , insects and crustaceans . The birds are mostly active at night, but can also hunt at dusk and during the day.
Because of the loss of habitat in forest-lined rivers, this species is endangered. It is estimated that fewer than 1,000 animals are still alive today.
