Henry Seebohm (born July 12, 1832 in Bradford , Yorkshire , † November 26, 1895 in London ) was an English steel manufacturer and amateur ornithologist , oologist and explorer .

Life

Henry Seebohm's parents were the Englishwoman Ester Wheeler from Hitchin and the German-born Quaker Benjamin Seebohm from Bad Pyrmont . He had three siblings: Julia, Benjamin and Frederic. Seebohm was interested in natural history from an early age and carried out ornithological studies, especially of eggs .

He began his professional career as a cashier at Seebohm and Dieckstahl Ltd , a steel company in Sheffield . He later became a manufacturer. After his marriage to Maria Healey in 1859, he undertook extensive expeditions to Greece , Turkey , Scandinavia , Japan as well as to the Siberian tundra and the Yenisei . About his travels to Siberia , the works Sibiria in Europe and Sibiria in Asia appeared in 1880 and 1882 . In 1901 a third work came out posthumously with the title The Birds of Siberia .

Further works by Henry Seebohm were: A History of British Birds (1883), The Geographical Distribution of the family Charadriidae (1887), The Birds of the Japanese Empire (1890) and A Monograph of the Turdidae (1898).

Seebohm was the first European ornithologist to use the American system of trinominal nomenclature to classify subspecies. East Asian bird species such as the giant fish owl , the Okinawa woodpecker and the Taiwan tit were first described scientifically by him.

Dedication names

The Madagascar grass warbler ( Amphilais seebohmi ), the red-headed bushhammer ( Atlapetes seebohmi ), the lucon silk warbler ( Horornis seebohmi ), the Atlas stone wheatear ( Oenanthe seebohmi ) and the cicada species Formotosena seebohmi are named after Henry Seebohm .
