Way of life

Formotosena seebohmi prefers tall trees and shrubs as habitats. She taps thin branches to get the sap that she feeds on. The males make very audible tones.

Reproduction

The female pricks a thin plant shoot with its sharp laying stinger. It then lays its eggs in this opening. The larvae hatch 5 to 7 days after oviposition. Immediately afterwards they crawl into the ground and feed on the sap from the roots of various tree and shrub species in their habitat. The larval stage of this species lasts for several years. The adult animals dig their way to the surface of the earth and perform their last moult on the bark of trees. Then they take off on their first flight.

Cultural meaning

Man catches the species sporadically to enjoy its song. In ancient China, they were considered the protector of youth, strength and life.
