Johannes Baptista Rietstap (born May 12, 1828 in Rotterdam , † December 24, 1891 in The Hague ) was a Dutch stenographer in parliament, heraldist and genealogist .

Life

Rietstap was the son of William Henry Rietstap, an accountant and insurance agent, and his wife Elizabeth Hermina Remmert. In November 1850 he took on a job in the organization of shorthand . In 1857 he married Johanna Maria de Haas. The marriage remained childless. His first book of coats of arms , which contained around 50,000 coats of arms, was published in 1861. In 1871/72 the time had come for him to publish his own magazine as a heraldic journal, since he saw it as his task to make heraldry and genealogy understandable for everyone. The issue of the "Magazine for Heraldry, Genealogy, Seals and Medals" was discontinued in 1882. In the 1880s he documented the Dutch nobility in genealogy and coats of arms , which led to book editions. The heraldic books written by him include 116,000 to 120,000 coats of arms. In the early 1870s he also worked as a translator of books, especially trivial literature. Here he benefited from his language skills in English, French, German, Latin and later Spanish. In 1887 he took another job as a stenographer for three and a half years and then retired.
