The Rifugio Bartolomeo Gastaldi ( 2659  m slm ) is a managed refuge in the Graian Alps of the northern Italian metropolitan city of Turin / Piedmont region . The Rifugio des Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) belongs to the municipality of Balme and stands at the head of the Val d'Ala .

history

As a starting point for mountaineers of the CAI Turin, the first refuge was built in 1880, expanded in 1886 (35 places) and named after the geologist Bartolomeo Gastaldi. It now serves as winter storage and also houses a small museum. A new building, very luxurious for the time with central heating and hot water, was built in 1904. It burned down in 1908, was rebuilt in 1930 and destroyed on October 3, 1944 by special fascist units as part of the fight against partisans. The current rifugio was built in 1970.
