Tertön Rigdzin Gödem

Rigdzin Gödem ( Tib . : rig 'dzin rgod ldem ; * 1337 ; † 1409 ) was an important Lama and Tertön of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism .

Incarnation of Dorje Dudjom

Gödem was born into a Nyingma family in the Tibetan village of Riwo Trabzang, the son of Siddhas Duddul. Under the guidance of his father, he studied the Nyingma teachings from an early age. The Nyingma school is one of the four main traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Rigzin Gödem literally means "the realized one with the vulture feathers", since according to tradition three vulture feather-like plants appeared on his head at a young age, and at the age of 24 others were added. He is considered a reincarnation of Nanam Dorje Dudjom, one of the 25 main students of Guru Rinpoche . Guru Rinpoche was a tantric master who introduced the teachings of Buddhism to Tibet in the 9th century and founded the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism . Guru Rinpoche's 25 major disciples became famous for their high level of realization.

Terma cycle of the Northern Treasures

Rigdzin Gödem discovered the Terma Texts of the Northern Treasures , a cycle of tantric teachings known for its extensive Vajrakilaya practices and Dzogchen texts. "Termas" are hidden texts, ritual objects and relics which, at the behest of Guru Rinpoche, were hidden by his closest disciples in Tibet and neighboring countries. This was done to protect the teachings of Tantric Buddhism ( Vajrayana ) from destruction by Langdarma, a Tibetan king (reign 836-842) who was hostile to Buddhism.

Bon Terma

Rigdzin Gödem was not only the treasure hunter of the Northern Treasures of the Nyingma, he also discovered some terma that are part of the Bon tradition.

distribution

The headquarters of the transfer of the "Northern Treasures" is the Nyingma Monastery Dorje Drak in central Tibet.

Khordong tradition

In Europe, the "Northern Treasures" are transmitted along with the "Khordong Termas". This Terma line was discovered by Nudan Dorje Drophan Lingpa (1809–1872). He was an incarnation of the drug Kheychung Lotsawa, who was also one of the 25 main disciples of Guru Rinpoche. An important lama of these lineages, who also taught in the West, was the 4th incarnation of Nudan Dorje Drophan Lingpa, named Chhimed Rigdzin Rinpoche (1922–2002).
