Rigibertus (Mainz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rigibertus († 724 ), also Richbert, Regebert (us) or Rigibert , was bishop of Mainz from 708 to 724 .

Nothing is known about the origins and family of Rigibertus. However, various written documents allow a relatively reliable dating of his work in the beginning of the 8th century. For example, a Regebertus is named as Regebertus Pontifex Moguntiacensis and thus as a Bishop of Mainz in a today lost dedication inscription of a chapel in the village of Nilkheim near Aschaffenburg (and thus in the area of the Mainzer Sprengels ) . In the specialist literature, this inscription is mostly dated between 711 and 716 and is considered to be authentic.

Rigibertus appears as a bishop of Mainz repeatedly in documents that were mostly forged in the 12th century, but experts believe that they have a historically correct core. In a forged document for the establishment of the St. Peters Monastery in Erfurt , the exhibitor of which was the Merovingian Frankish King Dagobert III. supposed to have been, claims that it was exhibited in the presence of the Mainz bishop Rigibertus. Despite the proven falsification of the document in the Middle Ages, the connection between Bishop Rigibertus and the Erfurt area, which later belonged to the Mainz diocese, is considered certain.

A document from the 12th century for the founding of the Altmünster monastery by Saint Bilhildis names a certain Rigiberto as the uncle of the monastery founder from whom she acquired the property. However, indications such as the list of witnesses in the document suggest that the content of the original document was actually correct.
