Rigor Mortis was an American thrash metal band from Dallas-Fort-Worth-Metroplex , Texas that was formed in 1983, split up in 1991, and reunited in 2005 before splitting again in 2013.

history

The band was formed in 1983 by school friends Harden Harrison (drums) and Casey Orr (electric bass), shortly after they met guitarist Mike Scaccia. After making some local appearances, the band got a contract with Capitol Records , where their self-titled debut album was released in 1988. Bruce Corbitt was featured on the album as a singer. In 1989, Corbitt was replaced by Doyle Bright ( Hallows Eve ). In the same year the EP Freaks was released on Metal Blade Records , which in 1991 the album Rigor Mortis Vs. the World on Triple X Records followed. In the same year guitarist Scaccia left the band to join Ministry , where he has played occasionally since 1989. After the band split up in 1991, Orr also briefly joined Ministry to replace Paul Barker. In 1994 he joined Gwar . In 2005 the band got back together. Various concerts followed, including an appearance at Ozzfest 2008. In February 2012, a new album, Slaves to the Grave , was recorded. In December 2012 guitarist Scaccia died after a breakdown at a concert in Fort Worth ; then the band broke up again. In 2014, the former members wanted to release the finished Slaves to the Grave album, but couldn't find a label. A crowdfunding campaign raised a good $ 20,000 and invested in the release of the album, which was released in October 2014. The remaining members occasionally appear under the band name "Wizards of Gore".

style

The band went through a transition from speed metal to thrash metal to death metal . The music on the self-titled debut album is described as technically demanding and "blazingly fast", with contemporary critics describing the songs as "music on tap" and mostly pitting the music . The lyrics mostly describe horror stories, although these were "by no means more gruesome than Slayer's ". The members were lyrically inspired by horror films such as Blood Court in Texas or Nightmare . The band sees their songs as "little tales of death and ruin, with the purpose of entertaining people". On the EP Freaks Bright was to be heard as the new singer, who, however, "sounds exactly like his predecessor".
