Rimworld (proper spelling: RimWorld ) is one of the Ludeon Studios to Tynan Sylvester developed computer game for Linux , Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows . It combines elements of the development strategy with a management simulation. The player controls the fate of an emergency landed spaceship crew, which must first ensure their existence and look for ways to escape from the planet. After several years of public alpha and beta phases , version 1.0 was released on October 17, 2018.

action

The game begins in the year 5500. Mankind has spread over a multitude of planets in an area of approximately 3400 light years . Despite all technical advances, there is no known way to travel faster than light . To travel between the populated star systems is the so-called Kryoschlaf ( English cryosleep used). Yet they are largely isolated from one another.

Because of this isolation, the worlds differ greatly in their level of development. There are both technologically and socially advanced stage Glitter worlds ( english glitter worlds ) and worlds on the status of the Middle Ages or even the Stone Age have fallen. The game plays on a sparsely populated world without central government: on the one edge of the world , English rimworld . This is where people of various stages of development meet.

In the “classic” scenario, three travelers crash on this fringe world. Since Alpha 14, other start-up scenarios are also possible. The optional game objective is to leave the planet. For this purpose, the colonists either build a spaceship or they travel to one that is offered to them by a friendly person.

Gameplay

RimWorld is based on two-dimensional graphics and is played from a bird's eye view . In the game there are regularly random events generated by AI narrators, which can significantly influence the flow of the game. The narrator AI affects the game more than any other setting. The level of difficulty itself, the severity and frequency of random events and the increase in these are influenced by the narrator. The game itself offers three ready-made storytellers, which can, however, still be configured easily:

  • Cassandra Klassik uses ever increasing difficulty and a shortening of the intervals between negative events.
  • Phoebe Chillout gives you long periods of peace between events, which can then be all the more difficult.
  • Pure chance gives you a completely random gaming experience. He makes this possible through unpredictable events and sudden changes in the level of difficulty.

The player starts with a handful of figures called colonists. They differ in their background history, previous occupation, age, random illnesses, relationships with other colonists, and a skill table. Some of these properties are generated before the game starts and can be changed as desired. Following the example of Dwarf Fortress , the combat system and the psychological properties of the individual colonists are simulated in great detail. In addition to their possible uses in the game, they also influence the course of the game, since a colonist can suffer a psychological breakdown through the interplay of various events and properties, which limits his or her possible uses. During the course of the game, other colonists occasionally join the colony and it is up to the player whether they are taken in or captured.

The colonists begin by ensuring the livelihood. In addition to housing, this includes the production of food and clothing and the generation of electricity. For the ultimate goal of the game, escaping from the planet, but also defense against hostile animals and residents, the technology system is another essential part of the game. Different starting scenarios offer a different technology status at the beginning, which can be significantly expanded in the course of the game and unlocks new manufacturing options. There is a large technology tree for this purpose, which gradually guides the player through the game. Various random events such as natural disasters, robber bands or character-specific events influence the course of the game. The player must therefore also take care of the safety and needs of his colonists. If all colonists die, the game ends early.

development

On October 2, 2013, Sylvester discontinued the project on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter . The aim was to collect 20,000  Canadian dollars (≈14,300 €). In fact, a total of C $ 268,312 (≈ € 192,000) had been collected by around 9,500 people by November 3rd. The first public pre-alpha version appeared on November 4, 2014, Alpha 1 on January 28, 2014. To get access to the pre-alpha version, supporters had to pay at least $ 30, for later versions $ 20.

With version Alpha 12, which was released on August 21, 2015, the player was able to tame, train and breed animals. Animals can be tamed with food and will attack the colonist if taming fails. 11 new animals have been added, including elephants, cows, new dog breeds, chickens and more. On July 15, 2016, the game was released with version Alpha 14 on Steam - Early Access .

On December 20, 2016 and with version Alpha 16, a complete revision of the world generation was delivered. There were also new features such as caravans and settlements from other factions. On May 27, 2017, Version Alpha 17 called "On the Road" was released. This update brings new elements to the world generation such as: B. rivers and roads. Alpha 17 was followed by two beta versions and finally the finished version 1.0 on October 17, 2018.

On February 24, 2020, after a break of over 1 year, version 1.1 was released together with the first DLC called "Rimworld: Royalty".

Sexism controversy

On November 2, 2016, games journalist Claudia Lo published an article entitled “How RimWorld's Code Defines Strict Gender Roles” on the Rock, Paper, Shotgun website . In this, she criticizes the fact that in Alpha 15 the relationship system evaluates men and women differently, for example there are no heterosexual women or bisexual men and men are eight times more likely to try to build a romance than women.

The game's developer, Tynan Sylvester, replied that these bugs were known and corrected in the Alpha 16 version released on December 20, 2016. The author also knew this, as they had corresponded by email before the article was published . In addition, the title is exaggerated, since otherwise the female and male colonists are physically and behaviorally identical.
