In Hamburg there have been three ring roads since 1970, which are designated as Ring 1 , Ring 2 and Ring 3 or are indicated with appropriate signs in addition to existing street names. In order to relieve other roads, mostly created as main traffic axes by expanding existing connections, they run north of the Elbe in three concentric semicircles through the city, the center of which is approximately the Hamburg city center .

The ring 3 is expanded mainly four lanes and connects the west, north western and northern town areas in an arc.

Originally, Ring 3 ran in the east beyond Saseler Markt to Höltigbaum in Rahlstedt and a connection to the A1 at the Barsbüttel junction was planned. The plans for closing the gap to the A1 were stopped in 2004. The expansion of Ring 3 east of the Saseler Markt was canceled in 2007 after considerable protests by residents.
