Rinia Park is located around 200 meters south of Skanderbeg Square , on the side of the main artery of the city center, the Boulevard Dëshmorët e Kombit (Martyrs of the People) . On the other side of the boulevard there is the National Art Gallery on the left and the Hotel Dajti on the right (now vacant) . There are also some administrative buildings of the Albanian government to the north of the Rinia Park .

In the south, the park is separated from the Lana river by the Gjergj Fishta boulevard .

history

Rinia Park was built in 1950 as part of a larger urban development program after the Second World War . In the beginning it was a small family park where the people of Tirana could bring their children to play.

After the fall of the dictatorship in 1991, the green area was used, like many others in Tirana, for illegal buildings, the construction of which was mostly made possible by bribing the urban planning authorities. The majority of these objects were kiosks, bars and restaurants. They quickly became notorious hangouts for drug barons, dealers and other dubious business people.

After Edi Rama took office as Mayor of Tirana in 2000, all of these illegal buildings were demolished and the park rebuilt. A total of 130 objects were torn down and 45,000 cubic meters of waste removed.

use

Today the park is used extensively by young and old. Old trees provide shade, there are playgrounds for children, and meadows can be used for ball games. The Taivani restaurant , named after the island of the same name in Asia, is located on the south-western site .

In Albania the summer festival is celebrated annually on March 14th. This pagan tradition is intended to mark the end of winter, celebrate the rebirth of nature and give people new hope. On the occasion of this festival, circus performances are held in the Rinia Park in the evening, accompanied by actors, acrobats, magicians and artists.

On November 28, 2012, a monument in honor of the anniversary was unveiled in Rinia Park on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the Republic of Albania. The work of art consists of two steel elements clad with bronze panels, which enclose a high cuboid , but is divided along the diagonal. One element consists of two walls and the ceiling and bears the text of the declaration of independence inside, which is supposed to symbolize the oppression of the Albanian people. The second element also consists of two walls and a base plate. The double-headed eagle of Albania is engraved inside, the base plate is supposed to represent the "foundation of freedom". The division of the entire work of art in the diagonal is intended to symbolize the completed liberation of the country from years of isolation. The monument was made in Austria and is the work of two Munich-based artists: the native Kosovar Visar Obrija and the German Kai Roman Kikla . The production costs amounted to 400,000 euros.

Some renovation work was carried out in spring 2020: new paths, new play equipment for children and chess tables. Compaction of the soil makes it difficult for water to drain off.
