Rise of Legends (abbr. RoL , Engl. For "Rise of Legends", full title: "Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends") is a for Windows developed real-time strategy of Big Huge Games , which in 2006 from Microsoft published has been. It is an offshoot of the 2003 published Rise of Nations (English for "ascent of the nations"). In contrast to this title, which has a historical background, Rise of Legends is set in the fantasy world Aio, in which magic and a technology based on steam engines coexist (Steampunk ). The timonium resource found in the game is based on the headquarters of Big Huge Games in Maryland.

action

Giacomo, inventor from the Vinci town of Miana, has to watch the murder of his brother Petruzzo. He swears revenge on the Doge responsible for the murder. The hunt for the murderer (and his backers) leads the player in three campaigns from the realm of the Vinci via the Alin territory into the world of the Cuotl. Over time, Giacomo meets powerful heroes who can be used in combat. The game on the campaign map (upgrade heroes, build boroughs, recruit units) is quite similar to that of Rome: Total War , although Rise of Legends is much easier here. The missions play very differently and very creative ideas have been incorporated. There are three acts:

  • The Vinci Campaign: Retribution
  • The Alin Campaign: Depravity
  • The Cuotl Campaign: Rebirth

Gameplay

Rise of Legends retains most of the innovative features from Rise of Nations such as city building, country borders, unit wear and tear, assimilation, non-perishing resources and the world conquest campaign. In addition, Rise of Legends has many of its own features such as B. buildable districts, hero units, dominance, a simplified resource management (only two resource types per playable race) and neutral tribes, buildings and units to be conquered. Compared to Rise of Nations, there are only three playable races. These include the Vinci, who draw their strength from the art and science that magic gifted Alin, ruler of the elements of sand, fire and glass, and the Cuotl, the jungle people who are most likely a mix of Aztec and the film Stargate remember .

The feel of the game, research, units and resource management of the three races differ significantly and are similar to the hit game StarCraft developed by Blizzard Entertainment .

development

Rise of Legends uses the same technique as Rise of Nations . Compared to Rise of Nations , the budget and team size for development have increased.

reception

The game received high critical acclaim. Gamespy magazine recognized the game with the award for outstanding achievement in art design in the selection of the best games in 2006. However, sales remained below expectations. Rise of Legends was only able to sell a third of the copies compared to Rise of Nations . Microsoft then canceled the contract for the development of Rise of Nations 2 .

Trademark rights

In May 2012, developer Big Huge Games was closed due to the bankruptcy of the parent company 38 Studios. On December 11, 2013, the company's brands and technologies were auctioned, including the rights to the name and games of Big Huge Games. The rights to Rise of Nations / Rise of Legends - including a fully developed but previously unreleased iOS game called Rise of Nations: Tactics - and the naming rights to Big Huge Games found an unknown buyer for $ 320,000. In May 2014, Microsoft identified itself as a buyer with the announcement of an Extended Edition of the previous title, Rise of Nations .
