Rites of Spring were an American post-hardcore band from the 1980s. The group is considered to be a pioneer of the emo genre, although they repeatedly rejected this genre assignment.

history

The band was formed in 1984 in Washington, DC by singer and guitarist Guy Picciotto, former Untouchables guitarist Eddie Janney, bassist Mike Fellows and drummer Brendan Canty . The group was named after the ballet Le sacre du printemps (English: The Rite of Spring ). After the band played a few concerts, Rites of Spring recorded their debut album Rites of Spring in 1985 . The album was released on Ian MacKaye's label Dischord Records .

In 1986 the band separated, with the exception of Fellows, however, the members played in the formation One Last Wish together with the Embrace guitarist Michael Hampton for another year and released another album. After breaking up with Hampton, Fellows rejoined the three. In this constellation the band existed until 1988 under the name Happy Go Licky.

In 1987 the EP All Through a Life , recorded in 1986, was published, which was included in the 1991 compilation End on End . All studio recordings of Rites of Spring were published on End on End , in 2001 a remastered version was released.

Guy Picciotto and Brendan Canty joined the Fugazi group in 1987 and are still active today. Mike Fellows released an album in 2002 under the name Miighty Flashlight and in 2004 one under his real name.
