history

The spiritual origin of the university was the private school Ritsumeikan ( 私塾 立命 館 , Shijuku Ritsumeikan ), which was founded in 1869 by Saionji Kimmochi ( 西 園 寺 公 望 , 1849-1940). The school name Ritsumei came from Mengzi words: " 殀壽不貳修身以俟之所以立命 ." (Dt about. Whether you die young or live long is a twist of fate through waiting for death with lifelong self-improvement can you. Be Fulfill fate .) The private school was closed in 1870 on the order of the prefecture administration , because the students were possibly revolutionary against the administration.

The school was "rebuilt" in 1900 as a school for law and political science Kyōto ( 京都 法政 学校 , Kyōto hōsei gakkō ). The founder was Nakagawa Kojūrō ( 中 川 小 十郎 , 1866-1944), Saionji's former secretary. In 1904 it was renamed Shiritsu Kyōto Hōsei Daigaku ( 私立 京都 法政 大学 , German "Private University of Law and Politics Kyōto"). Saionji allowed her to use the school name Ritsumeikan and in 1913 the school was renamed Shiritsu Ritsumeikan Daigaku ( 私立 立命 館 大学 , German: "Private Ritsumeikan College"). In 1922 it gained university status and renamed itself Ritsumeikan University. 1945 after the Pacific War Suekawa Hiroshi ( 末 川博 , 1892–1977) became the president and democratized the university.

The former Hirokōji campus (1901–1981, 35 ° 1 ′ 27.5 ″  N , 135 ° 46 ′ 7.5 ″  E ) was too small, so the university moved to the Kinugasa campus in 1981. In 1994 she opened the larger Biwako - Kusatsu -Campus (BKC). In 2000, the school body established the sister university , Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University .
