Rittenhousetown Historic District is a historically significant building complex in Germantown , Philadelphia and the birthplace of David Rittenhouse .
The settlement developed around the first paper mill of the Thirteen Colonies , which was built in 1690 by Wilhelm Rettinghaus on Monoshone Creek. The original parcel was 20 acres and was quickly expanded through acquisitions of neighboring properties. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, Rittenhousetown grew to more than 40 buildings, including apartment buildings, agricultural and industrial operations, and state institutions. Many buildings were destroyed by the construction of Lincoln Drive, while the paper mill was no longer needed as a relic of industrialization and was torn down. Today there are six houses and a barn in Fairmount Park , which were built between 1690 and 1830. They all face south, are made of local stone and have gable roofs .
On April 27, 1992, Rittenhousetown was recognized as a Historic District and added to the National Register of Historic Places . At the same time, the building complex received the status of a National Historic Landmark .
