Sophia Josefine Schäfer , religious name Sister Maria Hugonis (born November 24, 1930 in Niederlahnstein ; † September 14, 2014 in Dernbach ) was a German nun and long-time educator of the order of poor servants of Jesus Christ (Ancillae Domini Jesu Christi, order abbreviation : ADJC; also: Dernbach Sisters).

Life

Sophia Josefine Schäfer was born in Niederlahnstein in 1930. Her father was a machine operator. She attended elementary school in her home town of Koblenz-Horchheim. Due to the war, she came to Thuringia in 1944 and was discharged from the 8th grade in Quittelsdorf in 1945. In July 1945 she started working as a kindergarten assistant in Wiesbaden-Schierstein and took part in lessons at the vocational school.

The career aspiration was to become a teacher. She also felt called to God. That is why she completed the "Soziale Mittelreife" at the Marienschule in Limburg in 1949 and thus acquired the prerequisite for admission to the seminar for kindergarten teachers. Sophia Josefine Schäfer had her first contact with the order of the Poor Maidservants of Jesus Christ with the sisters from the St. Josef Hospital in Horchheim. She asked for admission to the religious community. On September 12, 1951, she was dressed and received the religious name Sister Maria Hugonis. She made her first profession on September 12, 1953.

From 1953 to 1955 she attended the technical school for kindergarten teachers and after-school care workers in the Marienschule Limburg and after passing the examination acquired the professional qualification. In 1955 she also acquired the "Missio Canonica", the church's mission to give religious instruction. Sister Hugonis attended a course for training in Montessori education in 1962/63 and a course in curative education in homes in 1977/78 .

From 1962 to 1976, Sister Hugonis worked as a kindergarten director in Sindlingen and in Hagen-Haspe, until in 1976 she switched to home education in the Herrman-Josef-Haus in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. She stayed here until she left in 2005. She ran the house from the point of view of Montessori education. Maria Montessori's approaches were her guide and advisor at the same time. Under Schäfer, the number of children cared for according to the Montessori pedagogy increased. The formation of a support association stimulated her in 1982, assisted the change of sponsor to Caritas in 1984 and was one of the last Dernbach sisters on site until she left in 2005. Hannelore Kohl , among others , was heavily involved in Caritas youth welfare under the direction of Sister Hugonis, especially for the Hermann-Josef-Haus in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. In 1996 both joined Alfred Biolek in front of the camera to demonstrate the success of this project; this program was broadcast again in 2011 on the occasion of the death of Hannelore Kohl. Also Johannes Rau was among the patrons of the house. With Maria Hugonis Schäfer's handover of the house management in 2005 and her departure a year later, the house lost a formative personality.

In addition to the Hermann-Josef-Haus, a day group was set up in Bad Breisig in which children with educational difficulties are looked after. In 2003, Maria Hugonis was awarded a medal on the 8th honorary day of the CDU in Bonn.

Since 2006, Sister Hugonis lived in the St. Josef senior center in Koblenz-Horchheim, where she was also the chairwoman of the residents' advisory council and offered a creative afternoon for the older men and women every afternoon. Sister Hugonis was also the chairwoman of the Friends and Supporters Association of the youth welfare organization Leuchtturm eV based in Bonn. After a serious illness she died in the mother house of the order in Dernbach.
